Mahabharat is one of the best mythological shows ever made during the 90s. Due to the lockdown, it is back on Doordarshan channel and breaking all the previous TRP records. This show is itched in the minds of viewers who have grown up during that time. Watching it again is a sort of memory down the lane for every Indian.

Koimoi spoke to actor Gajendra Chauhan, who played the role of Yudhishthir in this BR Chopra’s show. The veteran actor shared how Mahabharat was always meant to grab good TRPs and much more. When asked his views on the show charting TRPs, Chauhan answered, “The show is made at such a grand level that one can never question the TRP. From the actor to the writer, the dedication is such that everyone on the screen looks convincing. While watching the show, people can relate that in a way that there’s Yudhishthir in their house or a neighbour who is like Shakuri or someone like Duryodhan. We all met the type of characters depicted in Mahabharat.”

He added, “Coming to TRP, it has always been great. When Ramayan started in 1987, the TRP of the first episode was 34% and of the last episode in 1988, it was 78%. When Mahabharat’s first episode was aired, the TRP was 79% and of the last episode in 1990, it was around 99.6%. The show made it to the Guinness Book Of World Record for maximum TRP. Before this show, two Hollywood shows recorded maximum TRP of around 80% and those were Dynasty and Dallas.”

Reminiscing his shooting days, Gajendra Chauhan shared, “We all used to have a lot of fun together on the sets. In the series, Kauravs and Pandavs have differences, but after the shoot, we all used to be like a family together.”

About the show, he said, “I think if Ravi Chopra wouldn’t have made this show, it wouldn’t be of this grand level. After him, 4-5 people tried to make Mahabharat, but no one could make a show of this level.”
